What I've Been Playing - Feb 2017

This month I've had quite a bit of time to play games, so I've been trying to complete games that have been clogging up my backlog. I have a large stockpile of games that I've been trying to work through but it just keeps growing and growing. Since I'll be moving in a few months it will probably be best if I don't buy any new games to save a bit of money, that's another benefit of catching up on older games. So this has been my month in games.

Uncharted: Drakes Fortune

If you read last months post I mentioned that I've started making my way through the Uncharted games. So I've slowly been playing the first game, Drakes Fortune. And because I thought I'm better at games then I am, I played on the hardest difficulty aptly called "crushing", because at various moments I could physically feel my soul being crushed. This was especially true during long fight scenes when the enemies would take unfair and frankly physically impossible shots. There was only so much my fragile mind could take before giving up and turning down the difficulty a notch, and while not a complete walk in the park the "hard" difficulty was a lot fairer, so I ended up completing the game on that. The game itself was really fun, and going off on a silly Indiana Jones style adventure was a perfect distraction after a long day. I can see why this series has become so popular and I cant wait to try the next game in the series.

Life is Strange

I started Life is Strange on the PC originally and ended up getting about half way through before being distracted by other games. Life is Strange is an adventure game split up into episodes similar to the TellTale style of games, so is easy to take in bursts of a couple of hours. In it you play Max a high school student who has found out that she has the special ability to turn back time. She ends up being thrown into a mystery surrounding a missing girl and a secretive society called the Vortex Club. I've been enjoying the story so far and trying to make different choices then the first time I played. Also I'm playing on PS4 instead because the game was on offer for a couple of quid, how can I be expected to turn a deal like that down?

Fire Emblem Heroes

SOURCE: Nintendo / Nintendo Life [via. Nintendolife.com]

The last game that I've been trying out this month is the new mobile game Fire Emblem Heroes. This is Nintendo's third mobile game (the other two being Miitomo & Super Mario Run) and by the look of it, the most fleshed out too. Fire Emblem is a tactical RPG series and has been adapted in Heroes into a far simpler battle system to suit a smartphone. As a team of 4, your job is to defeat the opposing team by swiping your character onto an opposing character and end up basically in a rock paper scissors style of planning and tactics. One type of character is better against another and you just have to figure out the best positioning to make the most out of your teams strengths. As games go the complexity shouldn't be a problem for most gamers. The real draw of the game is collecting characters to build up your team. The orbs you can slowly collect for free or buy, can then be sold to have a random character created for your roster. I have to admit that this process of getting new characters is addictive, I can see why it made 3 million dollars in it's first day. But alas I just don't think that this game is for me, it just hasn't grabbed me. We will have to see if I carry on playing, but I doubt it.

  1. I've played Uncharted 3 on the PS3, but got stuck in one place and haven't played it since. I should probably boot up the PS3 and give it another go.

I really enjoyed the first episode of Life is Strange (PS4), so I should play the rest of the episodes really... I haven't been on the PS4 for a bit.
