Smell ya Later 2016

Monday, 2 January 2017

It's seriously scary how fast years go as you get older, I swear as a youthful little nugget a year felt like an eternity. At this time of year when I start to look back at all the things I did and didn't do. Although in the social and political space 2016 feels like a complete explosion of shit, as for personal life stuff it's been a pretty good year. So here is a rundown of all the good stuff from my 2016.

Favorite TV Show - Broad City
There has been a silly amount of shows that I have been enjoying this year; Stranger Things, Teachers, Atlanta, Gilmore Girls and a ton more. But without a doubt my favorite find of the year has been Broad City. The show follows Abbi and Ilana two 20 somethings trying to survive and strive in New York. The focus on one main relationship between two friends getting into absurd situations and just hanging out together is such a nice change from the endless deluge of all encompassing romantic interests that seem to infest the majority of mainstream sitcoms - that aren't based in a family setting- is super refreshing. On the third season now and renewed for a forth and fifth, Broad City is definitely a show worth checking out.

Favorite Game - Battlefield 1
Rahhhh! Again there has been so many games I've enjoyed so here is an honorable mention to a few of them first; Overwatch, Firewatch, Stardew Valley, Pokemon Sun and Moon, Pokemon Go and Xcom 2 are some of the games that have occupied a silly amount of my time over the past year. However Battlefield 1 is one game that I will continue to play for a long time into 2017 too. I have talked about how amazing the game is in a few previous posts and it still stands. I play it a few times a week now and I'm still enjoying the multiplayer so much. Have a look at my previous posts for more of my feelings on the game.

Favorite Online Thing - Kurzgesagt
This year online I've been really enjoying a bunch of science and philosophy videos and podcasts. While there are so many channels out there that are really amazing at explaining things and can put complex concepts into simple easy to digest videos Kurzgesagt has been my favorite. Kurzgesagt is a studio of animators and graphic designers who started a studio to create educational videos both for YouTube and commercial clients. They cover topics from space to politics and philosophy, with a charming and a well thought out perspective. Below is one of my favorite videos by them, but head over to their channel for some more great content.

Favorite Podcast - Stop Podcasting Yourself
Through the years I have gone through phases of listening to different podcasts more than others, however one podcast that I've been listening to for years and keep coming back to is Stop Podcasting Yourself. Each week two Canadian comedians talk shop with a guest that ends up always being hilarious. The friendship between the two hosts includes whatever guest is on so it feels like your just having a chill with some friends. Just pure happiness and fun. You can listen on Maximum Fun.

In 2016 I've managed to make a load of changes that will hopefully get me on the right track towards the person I want to be and the life that I want to live. At the start of 2016 I was really struggling with depression, and was falling into a pit that was getting harder and harder to get out of. I've been in treatment for this before, I was 16 when I first went on meds. However after a few bad experiences I swore off treatment, until this year. After a minor meltdown and a helping hand from Jemma, I went to the doctors, started taking a medication I hadn't tried before and the results were fantastic. I still have a long way to go and by no means am I completely fine now, but 2016 marked the start of me beginning to work towards a happy baseline.

Later on in the year another big life event happened, I got engaged. The actual proposal may not have gone quite as planned, but this is something that I've wanted for a long time and couldn't be happier. Me and Jemma will have been together 6 years in 2017 and I'm so happy to spend the rest of my life with her.

Also I finally got around to starting my blog, even if I've been neglecting it recently. This problem that I've had is for as long as I could start projects, I find it hard sticking with them. Both my blog and podcast has been updated shockingly infrequently. I blame this modern world we live in flashing all kinds of distractions at my face. However I've not forgotten about my little brain babies and promise I'll do better this year.

Well that has been my year, I have made some goals for 2017 but I'm going to keep them to myself for now. But I will tell you that one of them is to be more involved and motivated with the projects that I've started. With that also comes a bunch of new ideas for things that I want to do so keep on coming back if you're interested. I hope you all had a 2016 that was good and helped you achieve your goals in some way even if it was something little. Even though it has been a bad year for the world in so many ways I always try to look to the future to try and fix it, and if I need time to just let my self mope for a bit, a nice warm blanket can be a superb bandage for the soul. Hope you all have a fantastic 2017.
