2017 Book Goals

Friday, 6 January 2017

2017 is going to be the year that I fall back in love with reading, after a couple of years of being distracted too easily with flashy lights and lethargy it's time to jump head first into the written word yet again. I used to read quite a bit, not to the extent that some people do but still a substantial amount. One big reason is that I want to become a better writer, and one thing I've heard countless times from writers I respect is that reading as much as you can is one of the best ways to learn and find your own style.

Also thanks to my lovely fiance Jemma I have a shiny new Kindle to help out with this little goal. Let this be a lesson that if you want me to do something a little gadget is one sure fire way to get me interested. So I've made a list of books that I want to read that I can pick and choose from. As you can see from the list below I'm a fan of speculative fiction and books that incorporate philosophy and metaphysics. Some of these are from writers I know I like already and some are books that I probably should have read already.

  • The Summer Book by Tove Jansson (I'm currently reading this book by the Moomin creator, and have wanted to for a while. There is just something about her outlook on life that I really like)
  • Hells Angels by Hunter S Thompson
  • On The Road by Jack Kerouac (Really should have read this already)
  • Road To Wigan Peir by George Orwell (One of the last Orwell books I have left to read)
  • So You've Been Publicly Shamed by Jon Ronson (Tried reading it last year but it made me too sad even though it was interesting)
  • Valis by Philip K Dick
  • Cats Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut
  • Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand (Probably should have read already. Also interested in why it gets so many eye rolls)
  • I am a Strange Loop by Douglas R Hofstader
  • White Teeth by Zadie Smith
  • The Handmaidens Tale by Margret Atwood
  • Island by Aldous Huxley
This is just the start of a megalist of books I still have read, for example I've wanted to make a start on The Dark Tower series for ages but haven't gotten around to it.

What other books should I add to my list?
What books are on your list?
