Goodbye January 2017

Tuesday, 31 January 2017

January is finally coming to a close, and despite it being wet, cold, miserable and quite frankly boring, this year it has also been about getting motivated. So January you have lit a fire under my ass to conquer the rest of 2017 with gusto.

Island Life With The Summer Book

Thursday, 26 January 2017

If you have been keeping upto date with my blog you'll know that this year one of my goals is to read more, the first book I've jumped into is The Summer Book by Tove Jansson. Jansson is better known for Moomin, the series about a family living a quiet life in nature spending time exploring and idly going about their lives. Moomin and Jansson herself is a fascinating story and if you get a chance I fully recommend the BBC documentary Moominland Tales: The Life of Tove Jansson. The Summer Book is the first adult fiction novel by Jansson, and based around the interactions she witnessed between her mother and niece.

What I've Been Playing - Jan 2017

Well it's been quite a while since I've done one of these posts, and since it's the new year I'm filled with determination and have lots of games to get through this year. This month a few new games are coming out that I want to play eventually; Resident Evil 7, Yakuza 0 and Dragon Quest 8. One day I'll get around to them but this month is not that time. This is what I've been playing this January.

Lumberjanes and tools of change!

Wednesday, 18 January 2017

Comics and cartoons are some of the most important creative media in developing a society that is inclusive and understanding to others. This is something that I have grown to believe increasingly over the years, and being a man approaching his 30's faster then he would care to admit and STILL regularly consuming them, I'm happy to say that things are starting to go the right way. Lumberjanes is a comic that has been in publication since 2014, has won numerous awards and is able to confer a sense of understanding in a non patronising way.

It hasn't even been E3 yet and still we have some fantastic games to look forward to in 2017, with the return of large franchises like Zelda and Mass Effect, to some new faces and with a truckload of indies thrown in. Also with the release of the new Nintendo system in March there is plenty of pre E3 games to get excited over, so here are my picks of games I'm excited to get my grubby little mitts on this year.

The OA: Thoughts and Theories

Saturday, 14 January 2017

Source: Netflix

In December Netflix dropped another new original series to cap off a year that saw such critical hits like; Stranger Things, The Crown, The Get Down and Luke Cage. That show was The OA and appeared with very little fanfare, but ended up being a show that ended up capturing the imaginations of theorycrafters with its ambiguous story and bizarre premise. Now before we get into the nitty gritty of this you should watch the show to completion because I will be talking spoilers and theories about the ending.

Quirky chicken at Yard & Coop

Friday, 13 January 2017

Just before Christmas I was lucky enough to be invited along to the opening of a new Liverpool restaurant, Yard & Coop. An eatery based around chicken as the name suggests, this new location is only the second for the fledgling franchise after the success of their flagship in Manchester. So I was excited to pop along to try out some dishes on the night, and I was not disappointed.

2017 Book Goals

Friday, 6 January 2017

2017 is going to be the year that I fall back in love with reading, after a couple of years of being distracted too easily with flashy lights and lethargy it's time to jump head first into the written word yet again. I used to read quite a bit, not to the extent that some people do but still a substantial amount. One big reason is that I want to become a better writer, and one thing I've heard countless times from writers I respect is that reading as much as you can is one of the best ways to learn and find your own style.

Podcasticopia #2: Talking Simpsons

Wednesday, 4 January 2017

Right, well it seems I have some explaining to do, a month ago I started the Podcasticopia series saying, "I'll do a new post each week". But here we are a month later with only the second post in the series, what can I say apart from FORGIVE ME. If you have no idea what I'm going on about well this is a series where each week I'll showcase a podcast that I love and think you should all check out, and I promise that regular updates to this series is a 2017 goal.

Anyway this weeks podcast is the superb "chronological exploration of The Simpsons"; Talking Simpsons from The Laser Time Network.

Smell ya Later 2016

Monday, 2 January 2017

It's seriously scary how fast years go as you get older, I swear as a youthful little nugget a year felt like an eternity. At this time of year when I start to look back at all the things I did and didn't do. Although in the social and political space 2016 feels like a complete explosion of shit, as for personal life stuff it's been a pretty good year. So here is a rundown of all the good stuff from my 2016.
